NOT Our Most Dazzling 4th On Record!
In theory I'd like to say we had one of those magazine perfect 4th of July celebrations right down to our matching T-shirts, with color coordinated food, plates and decorations. And the evening was capped off by the most spectacular fireworks display you can imagine. But, um yeah, this is the REAL world and that is NOT what happened!!
Sometimes Reality Bites!
Instead we stayed inside the majority of the day, and in our PJs almost ALL DAY!! As luck would have it, they were up late the night before and were up early that morning - HOW is it kids always get this order messed up - it should be late to bed, late to rise - BUT regardless we were now housing two rather cranky wee ones, and I was dealing with a bout of wicked nausea - it was ROUGH! So for the better part of the day we hung out inside watching an all day marathon of Cake Boss! There was a neighborhood pool party, but it was smack in the middle of the day from 12-3, and if we went to the pool while they were setting up, Kaiden would want to stay for the 'party' which would mean no nap which was OUT OF THE QUESTION, thanks to them already being cranky. So we thought we would hit up the pool after naps. Well as luck would have it, the skies were pretty overcast with rumbles of thunder which means a NO GO for the pool.
So we spent the day catching up on R&R - well OK DAVE caught up on R&R my quota has been FILLED for a while courtesy of the previous 7 weeks, but the nausea made doing much of anything a challenge - I'm telling you anything makes me gag when I'm like this - looking down, looking up, the boy's hugging my neck, smelling ANYTHING - it's fun for all! But eventually evening rolled around - and there is a family in our neighborhood who goes BIG for the 4th, and pretty much everyone goes & just brings food to share & the kids have a jump house & snow cone machines, you name it! Not to mention they put on a FABULOUS fireworks show to cap it all off. We were considering going to this, but the clouds looked SO threatening & not to mention the percent of rain was creeping towards 100% and Dave and I could only imagine the boys enjoying the bounce house when lightning flashes & we scramble in a wet backyard to pull the boys away from the beloved bounce house - yeah NOT what I wanted to do for a fun evening.
SO - we thought it would be best to go to the city's fireworks display up at Riverstone - we could bring chairs to sit and watch, have some cold drinks & snacks in the cooler & kill time waiting for the show to start. FIRST there is some great people watching to be had up there (NO judging really just observations - it's like a whole other society around us) and there are a few vendors set up, a radio station has a grand stand going & it's a fun (albeit a little on the 'red' side) atmosphere. HOWEVER it was POURING when we left the house, but we had hopes that like every other storm this summer, it was merely a pop up storm that would quickly pass and dry up so we were committed to making this happen.
Well we read on the internet - MAN if only the stuff on there were regulated or actually accurate, ha - that the show was starting at 8:30 and seeing how it was already after 7, we figured we should make our way there and claim our spot - people hang all afternoon in the parking lot - so after making a few passes we found what we though would be a great spot, we angled ourselves in so that the back could be opened & the boys could sit in there while we waited & there would still be room in the spot behind the car for our chairs when the time came. As we were killing time hanging in the back of my car, we overheard a lady shouting to another lady - who was apparently in the 'know' that they couldn't shoot off the fireworks until there was at least a 15 minute break between lightning strikes - which there wasn't - and that it had to be barely misting or at least raining less than it was to have successful shoots. Well after hearing this, the fact that it was after 9:00 and there was NO END IN SIGHT for the storm we decided our best bet was to head home and watch a spectacular fireworks show on TV, where it was dry & the boy's could sleep!!
NOT entirely sure if they are doing the fireworks tonight or not - I'm looking into it, cause talk about an upset little fellow. Kaiden did NOT like the option of watching via TV instead of in person - but we told him we were disappointed too - I mean, really what IS the 4th without the big boomers?!?! Hope you had a wonderful 4th with your friends & family & that you got to enjoy your fireworks!
