We're Losing It!!!
Our Hair That Is. . . . .
So every Momma out there knows that sometime from the day you deliver that baby until their 1st birthday there is more than a few times where you may want to pull your hair out - I should have extended that time until they graduate college -- but they also know that at some point the hormones change and with it comes the great shed event!
Mine started about a month ago - and for those of you who have never experienced it - well it can be quite frightening. Literally when you brush or wash your hair, or even just run your fingers through it, strands, clumps - hair balls - fall out. I have to clean out my hair brush every other day - and tomorrow I am going to tackle the drain - I can only imagine the delightfulnes that awaits. . . .
But what I wasn't really prepared for was for Pierce to start shedding as well. I mean everyone has said "you know he's going to lose all that hair" but like most comments from strangers I file it in the "thanks but no thanks" file - you know the file that you put all that free advice these strangers feel compelled to share with you just because you are a budding pregnant woman. These little diddys can range from advice on what to feed your baby - "so are you going to breast feed or just use formula, cause you know . . . (fill in with random story)" to absolutely frightening not even helpful stories about some obscure person who had extreme complications or tragedy befall them while pregnant. I seriously would like to see a study done about what posses people to share these things, ask these questions and feel completely just in fondling pregnant women, especially when they don't even know them!?!? OK I digress - so back to Pierce - he's shedding. I am very, very sad! And I hope it doesn't change too much but the new hair coming in is decidedly lighter than his beautiful auburn locks now - but with those eyebrows I can't imagine he'll be a cotton top like Kaiden. For now he seems to be losing the most on the sides of his head and I would say he's thinning out on the top - it'll be kinda cool if he gives himself a mohawk - and although I am very sad he is losing his baby, downy soft hair - I do hope that as it grows back it grows in a better pattern - cause I know you've seen the pictures. Dude has some crazy cowlicks & fluffy cockatoo doos!
I'll save you the trauma of looking at my hairbrush - but this was what his little hair brush looked like after his bath last night - and this is also what he leaves behind on his sheets, the car seat, his blankets - I'm gonna miss it!

2009 Catch Up Post
Where We're At & Looking Back. . .
So I realized I haven't done a status update in so long that it made me a little sad! Because even if no one else ever reads these blogs I do, and one of the things I love most about blogging is that it captures a snapshot of our lives at that moment and I can go back, look at the pictures read the post and relive that experience, day or feeling, and with how fast life passes by who could actually remember all the little details if it weren't written down somewhere - and Lord knows I'm not a scrap-booker!! Kaiden's is still in the plastic wrap!? Not to mention everyone else is doing it - ha ha such mature reasoning - but I appreciate them posting their catch up's and sparking my memory that I too needed to do an update. So here it goes. . .

What's New:
Well I know I have mentioned it in some of my mass emails over the summer but Kaiden has had a vocabulary explosion!! It is outrageous the number of words he knows, how he speaks in complete sentences, how he can change around pronouns appropriately, he's starting to have word recognition when reading, he LOVES identifying objects and how he can connect all kinds of thoughts, with the vocabulary and follow through with the correct actions - for example he'll look at the chair say "I get up up" and then does it and once on the chair smiles and says "Kaiden get up up. I be careful Mommy." All that coupled with using expressive phrases at the appropriate times and with the correct inflection - it's nuts (which you'll be happy to know does not include any foul language - although he does say 'Oh Crap' which I think may be as much Daddy's fault as it is mine - but not too shabby!) Like he'll throw a ball & Dave will catch it and he'll exclaim "Oooohh Wow! Daddy catch a ball!" All this new found vernacular has lead to a much more imaginative play time - he'll go to his Elmo Kitchen bring me the menu (think we've eaten out a lot lately?) I'll choose my meal and he'll 'cook it' which is adorable because even if it's the milk he still puts the spoon in the pan and gives it a stir before bringing me my beverage and then I'll take a sip or a bite (all pretend of course) and he'll say "I like it. It's dewlicious!" and then open his mouth and wait for me to share a bite/sip with him - it's GREAT!
Current Favorite Phrases:

* Woah, dat's cwazy! - He usually says this in reference to himself doing something that is in fact crazy!
* IceCweam Truck Coming!
*Ashy, no no bad boy! - Ever my little disciplinarian, Ashy is pretty consistently getting in trouble at our house - regardless of if she is here or not and forgetting that she is a girl. What are best friends for?!
Besides his new vocab he has some other cool new advances - this might seem like a small thing to most people, but he can finally sit down on his toys and have his feet reach the floor on both sides and he can propel himself around the house this way - as opposed to holding on to the back and sprinting through the house like he's on an episode of supermarket sweep!!! This is a nice thing, I know for sure that Trooper appreciates this as well! He has become pretty proficient at using his eating utensils and feeding himself, which is a blessing and at times a curse - like when I need to hurry him through a meal so we can get out the door or off to bed - and he pitches the "Kaiden do it" fit. But like I try to tell myself, these are good things just not necessarily at that moment. Kaiden is also very into helping around the house, he has his own swifter broom, which he loves to push around the house, and I don't mind the help either. He helps to open and close doors when possible, and the boy loves to clean things with rags - windows, the fridge, outside of the garbage can - so if you stop by and wonder whats different - the kitchen is clean that's what!!!
Kaiden's always had an opinion and always found a way to assert that (wonder where he gets that trait?). Any how, believe it or not, this is proving to be a really good thing in preventing temper tantrums. I give him the choice of two options (on just about everything all day) and let him pick what he wants and that works for both of us. He got what he wanted (within reason) and I avoided a toddler meltdown. So nowadays, Kaiden chooses which sippy, outfit, blanket, snack, meal, movie, show, book, toy, game well everything - pretty much - and it works for us so if you've read that this is a bad thing keep it to yourself cause we dig it! We kind of call this the 'OR' game - I'll say "Kaiden do you want milk OR water?" and he'll consider his options and then makes a choice, it's pretty impressive. Although he wouldn't be a Kirk if he didn't bend the rules a little, like when faced with the two afore mentioned options and it's not exactly what he wants, he thinks about it for a minute and answers "OR chocolate milk" which he says while enthusiastically shaking his head up and down with a big smile on his face. What can I say he's a clever kiddo! He's always been crazy about books, which I love, of course sometimes reading the same book over and over can be a trying exercise for me, I know it comes with the teritory, that and it's not about me! He's definitely starting to show word and character recognition - like he'll see numbers in a book and say "numbers! Count 1,2,3,4,5" and then after a pause will count to ten

* Bob The Builder - lift a flap - Who he calls "Bob-A-Bilb-uah" it's hilarious
*One Duck Stuck
*Very Busy Spider - he just discovered real spider webs so he totally digs this book!
*Merry Christmas Curious George - yes I realize it's July but he's digging George and he picked this one off his shelf so what was I going to say - wrong season?
And, well pretty much any book with nemo, mickey mouse, tigger-pooh or drive queen - so thats a good chunk of his library!!

"Make It A Good Day Since It's The Last One You'll Celebrate For A Few Years"
Love that advice I got from a friend, well I think I certainly had a Good Day!! Although I have to say the day started out pretty crappy, although not too much unlike every other day which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but temper tantrums, explosive diapers, whining and crying and a horrible headache don't make for a great start to a happy birthday. But through the miracle of a few extra strength Tylenol, and catching a quick nap while the boys were sleeping certainly improved my mood! Plus a text from the 'hubs saying Mom was watching the boys and we were going out definitely got me in the 'happy birthday mood'!
A Little Birthday Bling With Meaning!
So I am really into gifts with meaning, big or small if it has 'weight' to it I dig them! So imagine my sheer elation when Dave presented me with a birth stone necklace for my birthday. What a great gift, I love it! Now admittedly, I am not a huge fan of heart necklaces - think of any Valentine's Day Jewelry ad and you'll know what I am referring to - but this I love!
Oh So Yummy Birthday Dinner
So in addition to my birthday bling, Dave had made reservations at a restaurant I have wanted to go to for months, I was so excited! We went to Milton's Cuisine & Cocktails, oh it was SO GOOD, I can't wait to go back! My only regret was that it was a little too hot and muggy to sit outside, because they have this great deck and I would love to have enjoyed it for a while, but that's definitely a reason to go back! We got a nice table in a quiet room, and had a great date night and an amazing meal! We really didn't know what to expect going in, I mean most of the reason I wanted to go there was because of the deck, but everything we had was out of this world delicious! Like the waiter told Dave, the chef "rocks some shrimp and grits" and yup he sure did! He also had some melt in your mouth scallops, and he certainly knew what he was doing with the If you are in the Alpharetta area or just want an amazing southern inspired cuisine, go to Milton's you will NOT be disappointed!
All in all it was a really great day - Happy Birthday To Me!

Pierce -
This is Pierce on July 4th, five days post-op. He had his draining tubes removed and although he was still sedated he was at a much lower level so we got to see him move around a little which was a really good feeling. Our friends Todd & Mel wanted to come visit him and since it was Sat. & July 4th, we found a cool kids celebration down in Atlantic Station to head to after our visit.
Independence Day In The City
Since we were already going to be downtown to visit Pierce we decided to stop by Radio Disney's Independence Day Celebration. It was fun & obviously exhausting!! Our good friends The Robinson's wanted to come visit Pierce and joined us in the festivities down at Atlantic Station. Also, because I have super awesome friends in the Lamberts, they came to play with us in the heat!! It was hot and when I say hot I mean it was take your breath away, don't stand outside of the shade ~ not that it's cooler in the shade it just seems like it should be, happily pay $4/a pop for snow cones, if you have your shoes off the soles of your feet sizzle on the sidewalk HOT!!!
What To Do. . . .
Well as I mentioned it was a bit warm, but we were determined to have fun so we let the kids pick a few activities and since it was a party JUST for kids there was no shortage of things to do. One of my favorite options was this decorate a balloon station ~ SUCH a cut idea, they had hundreds of adorable stickers with facial features on them and countless balloons to chose as the head, what could go wrong? I sent Dave with Kaiden to do the craft. . . .
BUT I have to say this balloon had a seriously funny sense of humor & he LOVED the camera!!.JPG)
I ended up loving this balloon friend!! Every video and photo we took this day (and night) there he was facing the camera with his adorable 'grrrr' face ~ yes I realize just typing that makes me seem a little crazy but it was a rough week & you gotta laugh when possible. . . .

Perfect Way To End The Day
FIREWORKS!! What else?! It wouldn't be the fourth without sweating your way through a humid night to watch the bright sparkle of some fireworks!! Although I'm fairly certain I didn't get any actual pictures of the fireworks we were watching, but at this point in the evening I was feeling pretty loose & am quite impressed with the photos and videos I did get!! Remember my baby just had open heart surgery at three months old five days earlier, so I needed to blow off some steam!! And apparently a few pitchers of 'Sip & Go Naked' (aka summer beer = frozen limeade, 12oz vodka, 12oz Diet Mt. Dew & 12oz Corona Lite or your favorite beer) will do just that!!! Don't worry I didn't show up to the fireworks naked, but I don't remember too much other than we went HIGH CLASS!! Yup, we watched the fireworks from the parking lot of the wal-mart about 2 miles away from the launch sight because although I thought I was keeping us on track we didn't actually leave for the fireworks until they were supposed to begin. . . . detail, details details!
We had fun either way, again most of what I remember is from watching the video, but here are a few cute pictures from the fireworks portion of the evening!

FIREWORKS!! What else?! It wouldn't be the fourth without sweating your way through a humid night to watch the bright sparkle of some fireworks!! Although I'm fairly certain I didn't get any actual pictures of the fireworks we were watching, but at this point in the evening I was feeling pretty loose & am quite impressed with the photos and videos I did get!! Remember my baby just had open heart surgery at three months old five days earlier, so I needed to blow off some steam!! And apparently a few pitchers of 'Sip & Go Naked' (aka summer beer = frozen limeade, 12oz vodka, 12oz Diet Mt. Dew & 12oz Corona Lite or your favorite beer) will do just that!!! Don't worry I didn't show up to the fireworks naked, but I don't remember too much other than we went HIGH CLASS!! Yup, we watched the fireworks from the parking lot of the wal-mart about 2 miles away from the launch sight because although I thought I was keeping us on track we didn't actually leave for the fireworks until they were supposed to begin. . . . detail, details details!
We had fun either way, again most of what I remember is from watching the video, but here are a few cute pictures from the fireworks portion of the evening!
