A Look Back At The 5 Weeks We Spent With Fuse

For every good story there is a beginning, middle and end - and in going over those 3 main components of a story you get the answers to the: who, what, when, where and why.  SO this is my little story about how Fuse came to be in our family and how we helped him into his forever family.

The  When
Well I guess I'm sorta gonna 'Terantino' this story - which I think means start at the end and jump all over the place until the story has been told - however there will be NO crazy violence, OK maybe some blood will flow, but not kill bill ninja machete kinda blood.

SO, as you know our beloved Trooper passed away this past August, and since he was my first Christmas present from Dave, Christmas was always sort of our favorite Trooper holiday.  He LOVED opening presents and helping us open ours too.  He could sniff out his treat packages and squeak toys with precision.  So of course he had a stocking that got hung on the mantle every year.  And this year as I was pulling out our Christmas decorations, it was inevitable that I was going to come across his stocking.

  • SIDE NOTE: I LOVE animals - duh!? And we fully intend to get another dog for the boys, HOWEVER both Dave and I were standing firm in our decision to wait a few years.  We miss having a dog around the house but agreed we have WAY too much going on with the boys etc, to handle a puppy/dog right now.
WELL if you guessed that finding Trooper's stocking and stocking holder made me have a crying relapse you are CORRECT!  I am happy to say that it did not escalate into a full blown sob fest, but I did cry thinking how I wish he were here for just one more of his favorite holiday's and how I would LOVE to watch him unwrap just one more present.  And I think it was about this time that Dave either sent me a text or called and I said how I had just found Trooper's stocking and had full intentions to hang it up this year next to Trooper's box on the mantle.

Well inevitably this lead to talk of getting a dog.  And when we were just home for Thanksgiving my girlfriend golden was playing with the kids and everytime K would take off running the dog would nip at his blonde hair as it bounced up and down - I think it reminded her of her siblings or something - but Kaiden was starting to say how he didn't like dogs, which was troubling to Dave and I since we LOVE them.  OK well as luck would have it someone in Dave's office knew someone who had a lab that got pregnant by the neighbors Rottweiler  blah blah blah.  The pup was CUTE, BUT it got me thinking, this is a life time commitment, and we know what we would be getting if we went with another Chocolate lab, and NO we are not trying to replace Trooper, that just could NEVER happen, but we LOVED so much about the breed we thought we would go that route again.  Well we found a litter that had pups ready before Christmas, because we wanted this to be a weighted, calculated family decision.

We went to visit.  Just to visit.  BUT who are we kidding, when you pile the whole family in the Minnie van and drive an hour away chances are you are going to pick up your pup.  Which well, is exactly what happened.  There were 3 male pups left when we got there, Dave made the final selection which was the largest and darkest pup in the bunch.  How could you not fall in love with that sweet face.  And even better Kaiden and the pup were CRAZY about each other.  That was perfect!

Well as time seems to do, it passed, quickly!  And as you predicted the sweet sleepy little pup quickly grew and grew and grew into a very cute put VERY rambunctious bigger puppy.  And added to that fun of course were his RAZOR sharp teeth, and the fact that he was growing up in OUR house which is full to the brim with loud, crazy boys.  So between the 3 boys and the pup they were ALL feeding off each others hyper, rambunctious running around which was then exasserbated by the boys being home for two and a half weeks for break.  This meant that puppy had to spend a lot of time in his crate because now either the boys, one in particular, was either playing too rough with the pup or letting the pup chew on him to the point of drawing blood OR the pup would get very excited and smash into Dax who started walking Christmas eve and knocking him down OR before Dax could walk the pup would jump on his back and chew on Dax's little hands or ears.

All of this was annoying and time consuming but we were committed and we were going to see it threw.  PLUS the boys would be back in school (EVENTUALLY) and by the time summer came around the dog would be a giant and there would be no more worry about the boys hurting him and the dog would be better trained and could follow commands, etc.  YES!!  My hands were full, 3 boys, two of whom still wear diapers - UGH, don't EVEN get me started on that, plus now a puppy all of whom need to be potty/toilet trained.  AND each who requires pretty much constant supervision, get into EVERYTHING in a seconds absence all require some sort of training and not a dang one of them appreciates the effort it takes.  Hahahaha.  BUT again, we knew that puppy stage wasn't going to last forever and Kaiden loved his pup which was one of our ultimate reason for getting a small pup now, versus say a 6month to a year old pup.

BUT THEN - when Dax was diagnosed with the giant litany of allergies, and that both the substance touching his skin OR being ingested could cause a reaction was sort of the last straw.  I just couldn't think about the big boys eating something that is on restriction for Dax and before I get to sweep, the pup scoops it up and gobbles it down then licks Dax which starts a reaction and I don't immediately know the source . . . .  OR the thought of leaving that poor puppy in his crate all the dang time was just breaking my heart.  So I was very prayerful about what to do.  Dave and I talked about it a ton, he was a gorgeous puppy, he was smart and doing well training but on top of everything else including the boys and now the allergies we just decided that we would 'test the waters' - I only wanted the puppy to go to a young couple or a family who could make this dogs life as amazing as we had made Troopers, IF no one like that answered our ad then that would be our sign that we were meant to keep this dog and like everything else we would find a to make it work.  BUT IF we were to get a response from the right people we would know it and that would be our answer.

Well as has happened in the past, and it NEVER ceases to amaze me, my prayers were answered!  I got one response from a guy saying he could 'take the dogs off my hands, but he couldn't afford to pay the "rehoming fee" (a rehoming fee is the way to skate around craig's lists rules about not selling animals)" Now I NEVER thought we would get rid of a puppy especially our new Fuse puppy, but at some point I have to realize when I am in over my head (which admittedly is one of my biggest weaknesses) so let me explain it like this: All families are on the ocean of life.  Some of them are in yachts, cruise liners, top of the charts accomodations with a staff member per family member and that is awesome for them.  Some of them are in little dingys, and they are making it just fine, happy with their accommodations and enjoying the adventure.  WELL with the puppy on top of being in Texas, with no friends, and the boys and all that comes with raising them, and the cats - don't forget about them, I was sorta feeling like we were bouncing around on an inflatable life raft and the puppy was chewing on the plug!  Ha haha  Can't you just picture that!?  ANYWAY, as much as I want a dog and look forward to sharing our home and lives with another I was so happy that we were able to deliver this dog to his new family.  A newly wed couple (2 years) but they were going to make this dog to them what Trooper was to us and that was EXACTLY what I prayed for, and who can ask for more than that?

Here's a few shots of our Fuse Puppy

This is 2nd, 3rd, & 4th week we had him.

This was just before his new Mommy & Daddy came to get him
I hope he has the BEST life a dog can have.  I really feel like we made the best decision for us and our family at the time.  I sorta hate looking at these pictures because it makes me miss how sweet he was.  BUT the good thing is I also remember how much extra work he added to my already full days, and he sorta interrupted what few hours of quiet I get at night.  When the time is right in a few years I look forward to enjoying another puppy and raising him (or her, but most likely him) as part of our family.  But for now my boys, and the cats and of course the hubs are all the 'raising' responsibilities I have room (or want)for, hahaha!

Annual Christmas Card Photo Shoot

AKA - Shoot A Thousand Pictures And Pray 1 Is Usable!

Since this year is our first Texas Christmas we thought well what better way then to mark the occasion then with a trip to Santa's work shop at the North Pole which happens to be conveniently located in the Bass Pro Outlet which is 3 miles from the house.  Really what could be better you ask!?  How about my Dad flying in for the occasion.  Well, technically he had business in Dallas that week but he did fly out a few days early to spend with us, so YEAH, he flew in for the big trip.

NOW, in case you have never been to the North Pole in a Bass Pro Outlet, which we hadn't, it is AMAZING!!  I mean really awesome, albeit morbid since there are real stuffed reindeer and other critters strewn about, but good news the boys loved it.  There were electric trains, and track race cars, and remote control monster trucks, all kinds of wonderful toys/gadgets to test drive and then have your kid bug you about getting it for him until you want to go jump in the giant fish tank hoping for the catfish to swallow you hole.

Anyway, apparently we were not the only family who had this brilliant idea to head to the North Pole, there was over a two and a half hour wait to actually see the 'big man' and with my crew anything over about 15 minutes is NOT going to end well.  So after visiting all the stations set up with different arts & crafts and toys we found a little niche where there were reindeer and trees and went to town snapping pictures.  Back up at the main enterance there was also this amazing 20+ foot Christmas tree and spectacular fire place with fire so just for good measure I went ahead and snapped a few pictures there too.

Me: You boys like the big tree?
ME: Hey look we found THE North Pole - guess who was unimpressed!? Ha!
Pierce LOVED watching the remote monster trucks smash around.
Then P & Grampa found the electric train
Then P found a reindeer he thought looked hungry - sweet boy tried to feed him
THEN the REAL fun began
I was SO CLOSE to getting the shot I wanted, but P thought he was supposed to hide behind K & Dax. Ha!

AND The MELTDOWNS -

Any guesses on who pooped out first?!
Oh sure pick on the baby - but NOPE my 5 year old was the first to be 'done' with it.

Followed closely by P who had a more dramatic but less moody 'fall out' HA!
Maybe he still thinks planking is cool. hahahahaha

Happy First Birthday Sweet Boy

I Can NOT, I mean I can NOT believe that my baby is already a year old!!!  Where has the time gone?!  Since it fell on a Monday we decided to keep it just a family affair, and since we traditionally take the boys to the aquarium for their 1st, but have been to both the Dallas Zoo & Aquarium more times than I can count we skipped it, got Dax two new toys - which IS a luxury when you're baby boy #3 and made some cupcakes and we called that a Happy Birthday to Dax!!!

My Sweet Birthday Boy

What's a Birthday Without Presents?

We were starting him off right, a steering wheel and a cell phone - PERFECT!
Tell me you don't look at that and see T-R-O-U-B-L-E?!
Cup Cake Time

I know, I know - this is a far cry from some of the cake masterpieces I've made in the past, but THOSE are made with MY homemade buttercream, which has butter and milk along with extracts which I wasn't sure Dax could handle.  See, at this point, I had surmised that Dax was lactose intolerant.  Back in September when I tried to ween him from the boob to a bottle I noticed that the few bottles that I actually mixed pump milk with formula he would get red bumps on his chin and cheeks.  SO when it came time for his birthday cake I made sure to read the ingredient list on the box and canned frosting (ALL I can hear is the quote from Everybody Love's Raymond Marie bust in to Ray's kitchen 'Oh Deborah you are using canned frosting, I guess it's SO much more convenient then homemade' HA!) Since neither had milk listed on the list I figured we were Good to go.
You see Dave striping Dax in the background - this ain't our first rodeo!! Ha!

Wait - last one, better shove it in.

Searching for crumbs - that was GOOOOOOOOD!
Obviously he LOVED his birthday cup cake.  Not one complaint!  Ha

His Year Stats

So as you may remember Dax was our littlest Kirk Baby yet, and since I have been both breastfeeding and making all of his baby food homemade.  YUP - you read that right?!  I have NO idea how this happened for the 3rd but not the first two, HA!  My girlfriend was so excited by Dax coming early that she went 'celebratory shopping' and she had this Babea baby food processor so she got us one and I tell ya what, homemade baby food is AWESOME!!  So dang tasty.  And since I'm in the kitchen all the time anyway it really is nothing to peel another few veggies and throw it in the steam cup for Dax and he gobbles up every single bite!  ANYWAY, I digress.

Height: 28"
Weight: 18lbs 14ozs

That boy is GROWING like a weed!  Since birth he has gained 14 pounds and grown 11 inches!!  WOW that is BIG stuff.  I mean I know that doesn't make him a giant when compared to the "growth charts" BUT it does make him our 'biggest' baby at their 1st birthday - he was 5th percentile for weight and 8th percentile for height!!  I think Kaiden was 2 before he made it ON the charts and now I don't even know if he's still on them, that boy is so stinking tiny.

At the one year check up I took the time to express my concerns to the doc about the rash that developed the few times he was exposed to milk/dairy she said to wait a while cause kids can usually grow out of it and that I could try introducing the 'Lactaid" whole milk as opposed to regular whole milk.  PERFECT - I got what I was looking for and that was the OK to stop breastfeeding - Momma WANTS her boobies back!  The doc also said that it was fine to try introducing some more of the "wait to try" foods like eggs, peanut butter and honey.  OK perfect, we LOVE our eggs in the morning so that will be great and maybe I won't have to keep making separate baby food just give him smaller bites of ours.

WELL - he's always been our 'sensitive' boy - he is the cutest kid with the WORST skin - the boy had cradle cap for months it only finally went away when I washed his hair/head with adult prescription strength dandruff shampoo.  AND I knew from pretty early on that he did not respond to milk well cause even when he was exclusively breastfeeding if I ate a peanut butter sandwich and washed it down with a big glass of milk his eczema would blow up red and scaly all over his legs and shoulders.  It's been a challenge to stay on top of that buying the largest screw top container of Auquaphor I can find - cause frankly the squeeze tubes only last a few days round here.  So I should've known it would go something like this.. . . . . BUT he got his one year shots, including the dreaded MMR shot - she said a small percentage of kids (like less than 10%) will actually break out in a measles like rash but they do NOT have it - BOOM 2 days after shots rash show up.  The next morning so day 3 post shots, I serve the boy his 1st scrambled egg.  He spits out the first bite, so we try again, UGH he spit it out again.  OK - I normally have only given him the cinnamon raisin bread with just a little butter or jelly and he has done fine with that, but as luck would have it this morning we are out of that bread.  FINE.  No worries I toast him up a slice of MY 12 grain bread, and after making the boys a slice of peanut butter & jelly toast to go with their eggs, I slather a little jelly on Dax's toast and cut his bread into bite size squares and leave him in his high chair to work on that while I finish breakfast.

Uh-huh - look over and Dax is clawing at his face, neck, ears, and eyes.  He is completely broken out with raised hives and obviously they are driving him NUTS!!!!  Mind you it's 8:00 on Thursday morning the LAST day of school before Christmas break.  I throw Dax and Pierce in Minnie and Dave and Kaiden follow in Foxy so that I can leave my boys in my van while I run into the pharmacy and get baby Benadryl.  WELL guess what.  They don't make Baby Benadryl.  In fact what they make says for ages 2 and up.  WELL I am NOT that great of a rules follower when it comes to knowing that my baby NEEDS an antihistimine STAT SO I googled how much to give a baby because I could NOT get through to the stinking advice nurse at the Ped's office and by the time I actually bought it and got out to give it to him his rash was subsiding but it still freaked my freak!!!

He was fine the rest of that day, no reoccurance or relapse and life went on as normal.  Since I had given him several new foods on the same day which is a NO-NO, I wasn't sure what had cause the reaction.  I thought maybe it was the 'tainted' jelly with traces of peanut butter or maybe my whole grain bread as it has sunflower seeds and such in it.  I didn't think it was the eggs cause he had his birthday cupcake and a muffin here and there that had egg in it and he'd been fine.  Well he got a bite of boxed cake made with egg & he instantly broke out in hives again.  Not as bad as the 'perfect storm' morning but it was enough to let me know he needed to be tested.

SO long (LONG story, you know how it goes with me & my 3, drama, screaming, yelling, tears and full on sweat and that's just ME) after poor boy got stabbed in the back with a dozen or more different known allergens & a vial of blood drawn it was confirmed that Dax is MOST allergic to eggs and peanuts, followed by milk and last but not least all tree nuts.  AWESOME!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure I got home from that appointment looked in the fridge and pantry and thought yup- EVERYTHING in here can kill my baby!  May as well have stocked the shelves with toxic chemicals with straws sticking out the top!  Melodramatic - maybe - but overwhelming all the same - YES!!  AND (coming in another post) we had the puppy too and since Dax is allergic to both the substance touching his skin AND ingesting it all I could think is GREAT now when (IF) the boys get to eat scrambled eggs and a bite falls to the ground and before I can sweep it up puppy eats it then finds his way to lick Dax and then Dax has a severe reaction and I have NO idea how it happened. . . . yeah, I was a bit overwhelmed.

He's doing great - luckily since he's a baby he is none the wiser what foods he's 'missing' out on, and although his allergist thinks eventually he may outgrow the milk allergy and maybe even eggs and peanuts later on, for now vanilla soy milk mixed with a little soy infant formula is making him happy and I got to stop breastfeeding which is making me happy and I just keep on making his baby food careful to read labels of noodles or sauces to check for contaminants errr I mean ingredients.  After learning his trigger foods, I was SHOCKED to learn that just about EVERYTHING Great Value makes has traces of one or more of his 'no-no' foods.  I guess cause they make all their store brand foods in the same plant.

OK - Back To Dax - Happy Birthday sweet boy, I love you so much and can not wait to see what this next year has in store for you!
